Assignment #13: Partner in Your Education

The doctors, nurses, and technicians at Milan Eye Center have all been partners in my education during this school year. By shadowing and observing the duties of all three in both the clinic and the operating room, I have been able to extensively expand my knowledge of the medical field, and more specifically, ophthalmology. With insight into this career, I have also been able to decide if I would like to continue my education in this field in the future. Although I mostly shadow at my mentorship, I have been able to make my supervisor’s life a bit easier by helping move equipment to another operating room when they need to switch or remembering details during appointments in clinic so everything the patient mentions is recorded in their chart. I appreciate the time they take to always answer my questions and explain certain concepts to me so whenever I have an opportunity to help out, I take it. At my mentorship, I have also learned about oculoplastics as I have the opportunity to shadow the oculoplastic surgeon every other Wednesday. Learning about this new career has actually made me consider the field. I have seen some really interesting surgeries with him and the changes these surgeries bring to patients lives are absolutely amazing.
