Scott, Rebecca Lovell, PhD and Byron D., PhD Cannon. "Ophthalmology." Magill’s Medical Guide (Online Edition), January. EBSCOhost, proxygsu-sfor.galileo.usg.edu/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=ers&AN=89093498&site=eds-live&scope=site.
This article on ophthalmology from Magill’s Medical Guide describes the science and profession of ophthalmology, going into the anatomy of the eye and common eye conditions and their corresponding treatments, as well as the history of advancements in ophthalmology. It has provided me with a basis of information that helps me better understand the instances I am exposed to at my internship. As patients come in with varying complaints, I am now able to recognize their symptoms and associate them with particular diagnoses. I would like my research project to be centered on surgical treatments as I spend a lot of time at my internship shadowing in the operating room. The information in this article has given me a background of how this area of ophthalmology has progressed and points out which conditions might require surgery and why. I would use this source in my project as an introduction in order to present the basics of ophthalmology and preface the more specific research I will go into.
