Assignment #5: Communication

Communication is one of the most important skills to have, especially in the professional world. When talking with my friends, I admittedly use slang and dismiss any sort of mannerisms I would use with elders. We bond over the funny nicknames and inside jokes we have with each other. That being said, they're not exactly expecting me to walk up, shake their hand, and call them "Sir" or "Ma'am". In fact, I think I would be laughed at if I tried to communicate with them in that way. With my parents, I speak to them with respect not only in what I say but also in my tone of voice. Now, I'm not saying I don't respect my friends but there is an expectation my parents have of me to be polite and demonstrate polished behavior. Speaking with an employer at a job interview is a whole different ball game. In this situation, I communicate with sophistication and confidence. I shake their hand firmly, maintain my posture, and make eye contact so they know I am actively listening. Professional manners are what they expect when hiring someone to not only work for them but represent their business.
I will greet my mentor with a firm, confident handshake and will be respectful and considerate. When speaking with my mentor, I plan to answer any questions with thoughtful responses, not just one word answers. I will demonstrate that I'm listening by making eye contact and asking for any clarifications when needed. My e-mails will sound professional and have structure and I will avoid using any sort of "text language". I will express my gratitude for their time mentoring me each day.
